Here are some excellent coloured photos from Verdun. Including aeroplanes and ambulances...

There are several other areas with coloured photos and illustrations there too. Here are some:

http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Marne_Color/Marne_Color_00.htm
http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Color_Photos/Color_Photos_00.htm (pre-war) (pre-war)
http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Der_Krieg/Der_Krieg_00.htm (illustrations, not photos)

Incidentally, I have a slightly improved version of the missing greatwardifferent index (HTML), fixing a few more broken links, should any like a copy e-mailed.

Crazy stuff. I was under impression that world was monochromatic back then.

Several different colour processes available then, some arguably/technically superior to Kodachrome. See http://cas.awm.gov.au/item/P03631.209, one of several hundred WW1 colour photographs (Paget Plates) by Frank Hurley in the AWM collection. There are links to others here and there in these forums - I know I've posted this one before - http://cas.awm.gov.au/item/P03631.035.
