Mortars Gas shells and artillery data
Permalink

I have a number of questions that are artillery related:

I understand the Germans used 72 mortars during the Gorice-Tarnow Offensive of 1915. Does anyone know what type and caliber of mortars they would have been using?

When did the germans start using poison gas shells in combat?

Is there a place on the internet that gives the specifics of artillery pieces used in WW I?

Thanks in advance.

Probably 25cm sMW - these were greatly feared during WW1 since the effect of the projectile was greater than even heavy howitzers like the 21cm Morser.

The first large scale use of gas on the Western Front was during the 2nd Battle of Ypres on 22 April 1915 at Gravenstafel when German troops released Chlorine gas. There had been an earlier, unsuccessful attempt to use Xylyl Bromide (a tear gas) delivered by shells at the Battle of Bolimov (Eastern Front) on 31 Jan 1915.

Certainly - it's known as Landships II (http://landships.info) - the artillery section isn't exhaustive but it's improving (slowly).

Regards,

Charlie
