I wonder if there is anything that can be done about this...

In a lot of forums, new posts will be placed at the top of the page. Posts that have been inactive, progress lower in the list.

In this way, a post that has long since been inactive, might get another post, and then will appear at the top of the list, where everyone can view it.

Roger Todd recently added a lengthy post to the old Vezdekhod article, which is by now a few pages back. Yet, no one knew about it, because it did not appear on Page 1 of the forum.

I really enjoy these forums, but I do think this is a deficiency. If it can not be fixed, then ok, it's not that big a deal. But if this can be implemented, I think it would be really cool.

Good point. I will see if it's possible to do do!

Good point Vilkata - okay, there is the 'sort' thing in the bottom right-hand corner of the homepage, with 'last modified', but that's a pain because who ever remembers to click on that? Hardly ever in my case...

So, Peter, if you can change it, that would be fab! Otherwise maybe a 'sticky' with the title 'DON'T FORGET THE 'LAST MODIFIED' BUTTON!' in big friendly letters...?

One forum to which I belong has a facility thet allowas one to see a list of postings made since the last time I logged in. Since one doesn't have to log into this forum this would not be possible but a button that say displays a list of all postings made in the last lets say 24 hours -  might go part way.

I know that there is no registration on this forum, but it still saves your activity on here. It remembers which topics you have viewed, and which ones you have not. That is why threads with new posts are White, and posts that are inactive are Black.

You would think it would be possible to simply make all the White posts go to the top of Page 1.

The "Sort by last modified" thing doesn't work perfectly. Especially if there is a post that is old, but you have not read it. It will still be on page 3 or something.

And again! It is not imperative, but I think this would be cool.

Howdy Vilkata,

For what it's worth I completely agree with you on this subject. One of the other sites I frequent has that very system and it helps tremendously, especially if you are actively looking for a response to your query posted.
Which brings up a question I had.......why is there no registration required here?....doesn't seem to me to be that much to ask......or is it?....?
just curious......

regards,

Tread.

People on this forum are from many different countries. Perhaps some don't even have email accounts. I think it is nice that you do not have to register. It means that absolutely anyone who can contribute anything, can come in here, and quickly post a message. If you had to register it might deter people who could otherwise supply really good information.

The decision that there should be no need for registration was taken by me. It came mostly out of the frustration with other forums that A. required registration B. while at the same time being very difficult to register at...

I simply wanted this Forum to be as open as possible! But I could reconsider on this one as well, if enough people want to!

We have now made a number of changes here in the Forum, that I think fixes both these problems. And a number of new features have been added, including two needless but fun ones: Avatars and Ratings/Rank! Enjoy!
