WW I ammunition found under glacier in Trentino
Permalink

Italians have found a lot of ammunition which was revealed under glacier in Trentino. Calibers 85-100 mm from mountain guns.

Altitude, 3200 meters, sounds rather high for using heavy weaponry. Anyone know more about this thing? 100 mm is rather usual caliber, but 85 mm?

Being written in a tabloid, accuracy shouldn't be vouched for, so possibly for 85mm read 75mm?
Some years ago, a howitzer was found melting out of a glacier in the Tyrol.
Guns were hauled up into the mountains & emplaced in ice caves.

That adds a degree of thrills to the old slalom routine...

Looking at the images the projectiles seem to be about the same calibre. I'd guess the projectiles were Austro-Hungarian 10.4cm for Skoda Gebrigskanone

(mountain gun). I'm not sure about 75mm though - most of these were cartridge ammunition rather than separately loaded.

Regards,

Charlie

Which reminds me: what happened to our fellow enthusiast from Greece who was unearthing WWI ordnance on the Salonika Front, using a pickaxe? We haven't heard from him for some time.
