MK I vs MK II track widths
Permalink

Rob, if you look back at your previous thread about the models you're working on, you'll see I wrote that the Mk II cab was made narrower in preparation for wider tracks, but that these wider tracks did not appear until the Mk V - as Roger's post says.

Up to and including the Mk V tracks were 20.5" wide, with many Mk Vs getting the new wide 26.5" track. Some Mk V*s may have had the narrow track, but I'm unsure at present.

For your Mk II, track width is therefore 20.5" (520.7mm), scaling down to 6.85mm at 1/76 with the 7.5" pitch becoming 2.5mm.

Hi All

Thank you both for your help.  I should be right to sort something out with the info you both have provided.

TinCanTadpole.. sorry, yes, I recall that information now, sorry, I should have referred back to that to begin with.

Thanks again both for your information.  If anyone is interested, and assuming I can get it to work properly, I can do a SBS on making the tracks if you like?

Cheers

Rob

Hi All

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a question about track widths.

After seeing what it was going to cost me to import some Matador Models tracks for my MK I and MK II builds, I have decided to scratch build a section or two of track and then use the Oyumaru and Green Stuff casting method to make them instead.

What I need to know is, are the track widths of the MK I and II the same or different?  I know the width of the cab is different, but I don't know if this was to accomodate wider tracks or whether it was to accomodate the grousers / spuds added to the tracks.  Also, if the track widths are different, what is the width of the MK II tracks?

I have the MK I tracks sorted, many thanks to Helen's fantastic drawings, but the MK II tracks elude me.

Thanks all in advance for your help

Rob

According to David Fletcher and Dick Harley (in their Little Willie article in Tankette Vol 16 No 4, 1981) track shoe widths were as follows:
Little Willie: 20 inches
Mother, Marks I to V and IX: 20.5 inches
Marks V, V*, V** and VII [sic]: 26.5 inches

Does "SBS" mean some sort of 'how to...' guide?

In that case, yes, it would be interesting.

Cool.. I will keep a log of how I go about this.  It will be fun.  I will have to decide how I will go about the grousers as they have different spacing on Kia Ora to the MK II.  In saying that, no biggy if I have to scratch up 2 sets of masters.

Cheers

Hi Rob,

The track drawing by Dick Harley is as good as it can get, so I had a quick look through my photos to give you a better feel for how they look in the real as it were. The black track I think might be the later wider track so just use it as a rough guide.

Oh and make sure you don't put the rivets evenly across the track plate, the middle grouping are closer together.  I'm going 3D CAD mental on track at the moment, as I sort out the track and drive for the 1/6 scale tank... as soon as tank track appears in my dreams I'm going to go do some shopping therapy to restore balance to my life. :)

Helen x

Oops, meant to say, all the other track is of the MKII at Bovi.

Good luck! Incidentally, here's the Dick Harley drawing from Tankette, on another thread a while ago:

That is a fantastic drawing.  Thanks for that.  It gives me a better idea of how the track should look in the end.

Cheers

Thanks for the pics Helen, and thanks for the tip on the rivets.  Fingers crossed you can get your CAD tracks sorted before they start invading your subconscious :)

Cheers

Rob

I agree with Helen's assessment: the black track looks like the 26.5", so use other pics for rivet spacing reference.
