What kind were they, under whose command?  I assumed they were the British Mark I, but maybe not.

The website: landships has lists of the Mark I tanks and where known, the commanders and fate of the tanks.

The first tank action was on 15 Sept 1916 at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette.
