ModelTrans Mark V*
Permalink

Hello,

I recently purchased the 1/72nd ModelTrans Mark V* kit.  I had to have it once I saw it was released.

Here are photos of the kit nearly ready for priming.  I scratch built the unditching rails, the supports, and the unditching beam.  They were not included in the kit.  Please note that the brackets that hold the unditiching beam in place have retaining springs.  I made these from fuse wire but have not attached them yet because they would get "clogged" with primer and paint.  Need to find the right diameter solder for the exhaust (again not included in the kit).

I also replaced the semaphore device as the resin version is very fragile and would have broken with my fat fingers.  The quality of this kit is excellent - except for some rivets that are formed.

As always, I welcome your comments/criticism.

Rob

Hello,

Thanks everyone for the encouragement!  Can't recommend this kit highly enough.  Beautiful detail (some missing rivets) and it's a Mark V!

RE: ModelTrans Mark V* Base Painted
Permalink

Hello,

I have now started painting the ModelTrans Mark V*.  I used Humbrol enamels for the base color and identification stripes.  I hand painted the white areas first and then masked and air brushed the brown and red stripes.  For the tracks I used WEM Track Color.  Lots more to do but the base colors are set.  Black Lion Decals provided the vehicle numbers.

Thanks,

Rob

Thanks! I too love the Mark V* and this has been enjoyable.  Still need to add the ditching rail and paint a few more details.

If you notice on the left side of the vehicle there are a fair number of miscast rivets.  Tried something different on this model.  I painted each and every rivet with a lightened shade of the base color.  I think it really brings out the detail nicely.

Attached are some photos of my finished ModelTrans 1/72nd Mark V*.  This kit was a real pleasure to build - including the scratch built un-ditching rails and beam.

Comments and criticisms most welcome.

It looks a lovely kit, Rob, and you've done a lovely job painting it too. Highlighting each rivet must have been a lengthy and delicate task, but as you say, it does bring out the details nicely.

One little question I have is whether the semaphore discs have been painted red and green? It's not clear in the photos, and the previous set looked like the discs may have been tank brown.

Eric - thanks for the encouragement.  I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this model.  Highly recommend it to anyone wanting a really nice Mark V*.

TinCanTadpole, I appreciate your comments.  I wanted to paint each rivet for two reasons - they begged the extra attention AND I wanted to see if I could do it and not go crazy.smile  I have attached two photos of the painted semaphore device for you.  They were brown from the base coat and near the end I painted them.  Every photo and color profile I have seen shows them to be what appears to be white (both disks and arms) with the disk edges outlined in black.  If you have other evidence for green and red I would love to consider that as an option.

Excellent job Rob, your Mk.V* came out really well. The colour and weathering really look the part.
