Detailing ww1 figures; British soldiers
Permalink

Hello to all of you,
i open my first topic.
As i noticed a lack of particular garments, typical of western front battlefields, I tried to create a set of figures detailing some market offers.

The first one shows a soldier wearing a Jerkin vest.
I know... it's quite a crime... the original one was a magnificent soldier from wd models.

Looks good to me, only thing I would say is that the buttons are too large

Fine looking chap but as Mike suggests " the buttons are too large ". Try forming them with a hypodermic needle if you can !

As a scratch builder I can say, my view only, getting 1/72 humanoid detail in scale is extremely difficult; look at the bloke's feet, for heaven's sake.  Even the mold-maker failed the challenge.  This is why the larger scales are so much easier.

A lot of leather jerkins (the ones worn in the photo look to me like the later canvas jerkins) had massive 'football' leather buttons so the figure looks bang on to me

In terms of the challenges of scale, remember that a 1:76 figure is around 20mm high, you are probably looking at it on your screen at five or maybe even ten times the actual size. Sculpting in 1/35 is no doubt easier, but surely when it comes to modelling, easier is not necessarily better?

Thanks a lot for comments and suggestion,
as Rob pointed, i would like to create a leather jerkin, usually fitted with larger buttons, while the previous picture shows a canvas-cotton jerkin.
The difference is clear in the two pictures below, taken from the web.
But the dimension of model (though less than 0,5 mm) is still too large.
I was thinking to use Archer rivets, it might be a good idea.

Brilliant idea of using the Archer rivets, they should be perfect if you get the size right

Great work! Always a challenge to make modifications on 1/72 figures. For small buttons, I've used glitter, glued with matt varnish. Each glitter speck is in fact a small disc of metallic plastic (some brands are irregular hexagons, beware!)

that made me laugh Diego. Just love the image of soldiers going over the top covered in glitter not quite the image the generals would like

Well, admittedly some of the uniforms of 1914 were quite flashy! And my daughter would think that glitter would have made them much more adequate. But I was talking of some particles of glitter used as buttons or small flat rivets. And they DO look pretty before you paint them!

Waiting to solve the problem of the jerkin buttons, I tried to recreate a soldier wearing a goatskin while he's spotting the enemies to a lewis gunner or a sniper. I used parts of different models adding some details.
