Daimler Type 165 engine
Permalink

Haven't had any luck finding any technical references, images, or other surviving examples of the A7V's engine. Perhaps others on this forum can point me in the right direction?

Thank you

Mark

There is a 3-view drawing of the Daimler-Benz 165 engine in Hundleby & Strasheim's "The German A7V Tank" (1990) as well as some images. Both the drawing and images are

attributed to Daimler-Benz A.G.

Charlie

Thanks Charlie. It's weird though that none appear to have survived, other than those in Mephisto. Schneider and Strasheim mention that the engine cylinder markings bear the prefix letters "MD". In fact, most all the engine's subcomponents are similarly marked. You'll see from the accompanying image however that the "M" and the "D" are not separated, but joined.

It's tempting to speculate that the "D" refers to Daimler, and the "M" refers to Motoren (or even Marienfelde). I'd be interested to hear if you, or other forum readers, can lend weight to this suggestion.

Thanks

Mark

MD = Mercedes Daimler?

Daimler-Benz didn't exist until 1926. Daimler used the Mercedes brand name before WW1. The aero-engines built by Daimler

during WW1 seem to have been known as Mercedes engines.

Charlie
