St. Chamond Caisson Tank

With the Mark IV tank already done as a supply tank version, I wonder if anyone has done the St. Chamond version with the plated-over gun port yet.  I did see a picture on page 20 of "French Tanks Of World War 1" by Steve Zagola.

Also wondered how the thing was marked and colored.  The Mark IV tank actually said "SUPPLY" on it.

The Mark IV female I'm working on now is going to take some time to finish up.

Check out the cardmodels on Landships II - Wayne McCullough has designed a 1/72 Char Caisson Saint-Chamond.

There weren't major differences between the early Saint-Chamond tank and the Char Caisson - the gun port and MG ports were plated over.

Regards,

Charlie

WOW!  Somebody not only has done it, but it has proven far more complicated than I anticipated.

Still, the early St. Chamond was probably far more successful in the caisson role than in the fighting role.

I suppose that the caisson versions were not necessarily identical; the one pictured in my Zaloga book didn't have the big box on the top left, and common sense if nothing else suggests that there must have been field modifications of different sorts over time.

Bonjour,

Gilles, is vey often cut of internet in his job. On this topic from "Les Colleurs de plastique" you have (of course in French),

a lot of comments and photos from Gilles about this Saint Chamond caisson.

 http://www.colleurs-de-plastique.com/forums/showthread.php?59742-Défi-Lostiznaos-vs-S.tank-St-Chamond-contre-St-Chamond

"St. Chamond was probably far more successful in the caisson role than in the fighting role"

48 Saint Chamond in early model (with flat roof) were built in Recovery tank (Saint Chamond caisson).

All these tanks were modified in factory and never in units.

When the order was given to built these Saint Chamond caisson, some of these tanks haven already received their gun.

The biggest difference from the front tank is there :

                    - St Chamond with dismanted gun,

                    - St Chamond built without gun.

The other Saint Chamond M1 (with double armor) were used in Groups in all fights with tanks in 1917 and 1918,

and very often with the two models (M1 and M2) in the same Battery.

In September/October 1918, the Saint Chamond's Groups (AS 34 and AS 35) fighting with the American Army used already M1 mixed with M2.

There is no combat team reports speaking about problems in the M1 and is flat roof . . . . .

"the one pictured in my Zaloga book didn't have the big box on the top left"

From what photo are you speaking ?

Some other Saint Chamond caisson photos in website from Antoine Misner.     chars-français.net

          http://www.chars-francais.net/2015/index.php/engins-blindes/chars?task=view&id=61

On "Les Colleurs de plastique", in this part of this forum ( Les Group build et concours), many others interesting topics :

Thank you very much Michel!
As usual you gives the most useful informations on those strange vehicles. I cannot add a lot...

Most of my conversion work comes directly from the posts on Pages14-18.

Regards
Gilles
