We're truly in the golden age for modeling WWI British Heavy Tanks in 1/35th ... I'm amazed and thankful that we have so many kits to choose from right now. What's available today is so much better than the "ancient" (circa'1991) Emhar offerings, which were the only game!
Has anyone done a side-to-side comparison between the Mark IV and Mark V kits on the market? Also, what after market items are available today?
I built one Tamiya Mk IV and three Takom's.
Tamiya is very easy to built but suffers of some over simplified parts and awful beam rail. Very good for beginner
Nice pilot and TC hatch in two parts and rear hatch of correct dimension
Bad Lewis gun in one piece with ball.
Really awful beam rail due the need of opening hull to access to motor.
Takom's building needs lot of attention, dry fitting and some work on joint between parts but general detail is better. I suggest them from a medium skilled modeller onwards.
Bad pilot and TC hatch in one parts (if you put them close the tank is completly blind and usually when opened the smallest hatch was also opened) and rear hatch of smaller dimension
Both models need radiator filler cup.
I know there are gun and MG barrels from Aber and Lion Roar and some PE freat from Eduards.
Now I have only the Meng MkV, Takom's will arrive monday.
Meng: very nice reproduction of interior and general detail.
It is a litlle longer then Takom (compared to Takom MkIV hull, Mk V is derived from it) and a very littele difference in horn shape.
Thanks ... All of these kits are a very far cry from the Emhar kits! Years ago, I did meet with the owner of Emhar, Phil - forgot his last name - in Chicago, and he was basically done with the molds, so all I could offer was some comments regarding colors and markings. I've taken the plunge once again after about 10-ish years, model-wise, starting to put together an 1/35 Emhar Mark IV Female see what skills I've lost :)
I have only built the Takom Mark IV, and I think it is one of the best kits I have ever built. Fit is good if you take care with the sprue attachment points and flash, and the shape is spot on to the blueprints. There is very little to correct to have a very accurate model of the tank (see my build thread for the changes).
About the driver and commander vision flaps: According to my understanding of the mechanism, the smaller flap must be open first, the larger will only open with the small flap being fully open. I have visualized this here:
