Modelling War Department Light Railways

Having discovered the excellent WD Models 1/76 scale vehicles and figures, I decided to model some WDLR.

I could not find any locos available and decided to have a go a scratch building a Simplex 20hp petrol loco for inclusion in a small diorama.

Hello,

Nicely done, congrats.

Anyway, there is one kit which exists :

Not so easy to build but nice result.

All the best,

If you require any rolling stock kits, there are some available from Parkside Dundas

Yes, I have some of the Parkside Dundas kits.

I looked at the Nigel Lawson kit but I didn't want one that worked.

More of the build, I decided to build two, one with an open engine cover for a diorama that I had been planning.

As you can probably tell, I am posting this well after the build, as and when time permits, its seems to take an age to get things uploaded - but they may be due to living in the wilds of Yorkshire!

Here they are after more work.

Then I added the Simplex and the Parkside Dundas D class bogie wagon and ambulance van to a diorama with WD figures showing the evacuation of wounded troops.

Of course now that I was fired up I decided to build at least one 20hp Simplex in 1/32 scale. I like the better quality figures available in 1/32.

I know that Scale Link do a Simplex but decided to try Scratch building one.

Here are a few photographs of the build. It is mostly plastic card with OO wheels.

I am making my own from OO rail pinned to wooden sleepers with cut down staples.

Here are a few pictures.

This will then be ballasted and that should hold it all firm.

The pins are super-glued in place.

It is for display only and not intended to run.

Nice work! I'm not a model railroader, so I had to lookup what WDLR was. Very interesting.

More work done on the 1/32 Simplex.

The brake wheel was made from solder, stretched around a circular tube and then the spokes added.

Other bits from plastic card, seat, gear lever, clutch pedal and so on.

Engine cover was plastic card formed around a piece of balsa.

More work on the Simplex.

Exhaust and other bits.

Test fitting the driver - from the 1.32 Scale Link range, he had to be cut and bent somewhat!

I have not been here for a while, but I did design a Simplex in various scales for 3D printing, starting with 1/35, then resized it to scales including 1/76 and 1/32. It is a bit basic, but does the job. Not an easy model to motorize in any scale, but can be used as a dummy.

I think I probably mentioned these items a couple of years ago. I was at Tracks to Trenches event then, but have taken a break from WW1 modelling for a year or so, but intend to build something for 2018 event in 1/19th scale(SM32 for railway modelling). My designs are aimed more at railway modellers, so don't have some detail, but I am sure good modellers can add that.

My 1/76 Pechot wagons were used in an article in French magazine Voie Libre.

This is my 1/19th scale Pechot wagon

I then built some stock for the locos to haul.

Here is a WD D class bogie wagon , scratch built.

I made my own transfers, these are yellow, I later replaced them with white.
