"American Cleve S. Shaffer, who built early orchard tractors, sold out to Fageol and designed an armored version, fitted with machine guns which he offered to the German Consul in San Francisco in 1915"


Does any one know anything about this? An Orchard tractor (for those unaware) was apparently designed to cope with steep hill sides and banks studded with objects (trees). Those bult by Fageol did not have round tyred rear wheels these being replaced by something in between a spiked wheel and a multi toothed cog wheel.



Fageol may have had later military ambitions.


"Pacific Service Magazine of June. 1917, says "Ground was broken June 10th for the Fageol Motors Company at One Hundred and Sixth Avenue and Boulevard, Oakland, under the auspices of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. Some 2,000 people were in attendance. The ceremonies were opened by Jos. Chrystostomo, power sales engineer of Pacific Service. ....The company will build military and farm tractors and marks the second large motor factory for Oakland." No more mention has been found of the "military" tractor Fageols were going to build."

   I have a little information on this Armored Fageol, I was planning on it being used in my 2nd part of the American Armored Car section, The reason Armored Car, is because it was classified as a Armored Car not a tank.


I have an official report on the design, and 1 photo of a fageol (WITH OUT WOODEN ARMOR) that was used to place a wooden mock up of the prototype design on. This along with drawing’s were presented to the Germans in 1915. It was never built with steel. It is quite an interesting design.


The photo of the Fageol you have is I think a 1917 version. They were also slated as being used as small artillery tractors, like for the 75 etc.


They were never placed in service; I think they may have jumped the gun a little with that article.
