lFH 16 Manufacturer

Attached is an image of the breech ring markings of a 10cm lFH 16 howitzer. The manufacturer mark

"ES" is a puzzle - I know I've seen it before but my failing memory just won't cooperate - anyone

help - please?

Regards,

Charlie

How about ES = "Eisenhütte Silesia, Paruschowitz Oberschlesien" - in English "Silesian Ironworks". The plant was quite

capable of heavy steel fabrication.

Charlie

This site mentions the company (as Stahlhelm producer) abbreviation as Si.

In the rear exhibition of the Artillery Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia, there is a 10.5-cm LEFH 16 howitzer No. 22043 of the 1917 model. I do not know why poorly educated museum workers identified this item as " a 107-mm QF field gun of the Krupp system. Germany ", but this is a label with such content, which stands next to the gun.

But my questions concern the "SR"(or "RS") mark and the numbers on the breech of the gun. What are they about?

Thanks!

The lFH 16s and FK 16s were built by many manufacturers since Rheinmetal in WW1 wasn't a huge integrated enterprise as Krupp was.

The numbers and company identifications on the top right of the breech ring  are the companies that did the forging and machining of the

barrel. The final assembly of the gun was done by the company SR. There is probably a marking on the rear of the carriage in front of the

towing eye which shows the carriage builder. The gun number was the final official acceptance number of the gun.

These are my best guesses at the manufacturers:

H & L - Haniel & Lueg Düsseldorf

SR - (guess) - Siemens Halske/ Siemens Martin

BV - Bochum Verein

RS could be Rheinmetall Sömmerda?

Certainly could be - the Ehrhardt/Rheinmetall plant in Sömmerda manufactured artillery pieces from 1900.
