Mk IV / V track question
Permalink

This maybe a strange question.. but if the Mk IV and Mk V tanks are relatively the same size..

Why is the Tamiya MK IV tank have 87 track links and Takom have 92 ?

the same question for Meng Mk V 91 track links / Takom Mk V 90 track links.

Shouldn't they be the same ?

Hi Ned,
The tracks on both tanks are adjustable and so it would depend on the setting when the original was measured as to how many links are advised or included in each companies model.

Thanks Paul, it just seemed odd to me that there would be such a difference, for a tank that is the same size..

Yes it is adjustable , depending of the position of the tension wheel ( Inward / outward )
In real the tankers were tensioning up the track ( To counterstrike the wear ) and once they could not extend anymore the tension wheel , they were removing 1 track
link .
So the number of link is not an exact science.....

There are pretty strict wear limits on track shoes otherwise the drive sprockets wear very quickly

and if badly worn the track won't engage the drive sprocket.

I think the allowable wear varies between different vehicles considerably. The WW1 tanks system

looks as if it would have fairly low wear/stretch limits since the drive relies on the sprocket engaging

pins in the track rather than the modern system of the sprocket engaging slots in the track.

There should be wear limits recorded for the rhomboid tracks (somewhere) - there is a manual for the Mark V* on Gallica in

French - perhaps that has the wear limits.

It looks more like administrative/training organisation manuals but there may be something useful there.

Thanks
I downloaded it.Thanks
Unfortunately nothing about the mechanical part of the MK V*
The wear of the drive sprocket will match the wear of the track links .
I do not have the book in hands now but I am quite sure Bion is mentioning this in his book.
Best Regards

Hi !

The 2 manuals are Great !!!!!
Regarding the tracks , there are , on page 119 and 120 of first volume :
- The installation and use and storage of the "spuds" ( "Patins antiderapants" )
- The installation , use and storage of the "unditching beam" ( " Soc de degagement " )

Best Regards
Olivier
