Closed at the moment because of the virus, but they have a skeleton staff on duty.

If you go to the archive and search "tank" you get this. 400+ images, some familiar, but a lot from private donors and that are new to me.

Unfortunately, though not surprisingly, there are many incorrect captions. I've been in touch with the curators, and they're happy for me to go through the archive and make corrections. They can only update the captions when they get the time, so the changes won't be immediate, but they will happen. (It's also worth searching "armored cars" and "train") If I get stuck, I'll turn to the Landships fraternity  for assistance.

In the meantime, here are a few photos that caught my eye. What's that mast thing on top of the Mk V*? Can anyone identify the film from which the last picture is a still?

The 4th image is very nice. I'd guess a Victory Parade in the US - perhaps someone knows which city. The tractors are 5-ton Holt artillery tractors and the guns 155mm Schneider Mle 1917 howitzers.

The first couple of images reminded me of a other images of converted tanks used in battlefield clean up in 1919/20. 

If the Mark V* really is "10220" then the landships list says this tank was given to the French Army. 

Had a quick look - the captions for the artillery images are probably not much better than for the tank images.

James would you mind if I ran the image of the Mark V with strange appendage past the French guys in 14-18 forum?

It may have been a French radio experiment.

Bonjour James,

 

Most of photos, from Sergeant Harry Hales was done inside Bourron camp.

Hales was member ot 2nd Air Service Mechanics Regiment, working their, on Renault FT, destoyed on the battle field.

Tank Schneider and Sant Chamond, seen in Bourron, were also repaired or dismounted at the end of war, and in 1919.

Bourron camp was built in April/May 1918 and five Motors mechanics Coy worked in Bourron and Martigny-les-Bains,

for Artillerie Speciale.

All Mark V*, given at the French Army was sent in Bourron and, never used in fights.

Sergeant Hales, also done photos from Elfriede in bourron and, on fontainebleau's shouting range (north of Bourron).

it is interresting to see,that most of well known postcards from Renault FT were done by Hales in Bourron.

Pulled a few of the artillery images out of the archive and came across the attached.

The caption says "French artillery piece" - it isn't, although the soldiers in the images are French My guess it's Russian but it isn't

one of the 152mm 120 Pood guns which were captured on the Somme. Any ideas?
