1890 Berthier cavalry rifle markings

I have a French Berthier 1890 Cavalry rifle.... in great condition;  It has a large "star of david" escribed by tiny tacks on both sides of the stock.

Was this rifle used in Israel?

Was this something a Jewish Soldier in WW 1 might add?

Is there any other explanation?

Thanks.

This might be irrelevant, but this plaque is on the rear ot the Saint-Chamond at Saumur. I don't think there's anything Jewish about it, I suspect the star is just a design that people liked, Berthier amongst them. There are also swastikas carried as decoration and nothing to do with WWII.

Although, as usual, I might be wrong.

The St-Chamond star is a true 6 pointed star (radial symmetry) unlike the star of David which is two overlapping triangles.

The 1890s in France was marked by a lot of political activity about anti-semitism because of the Dreyfus affair. Perhaps it

was someone making a political statement. The Zionist movement was just getting started about then so a Star of David

would have been an avant garde symbol something like the Black Sun symbol these days.
