I have a feeling we've discussed this before, but I can't remember where. However, Witold Lawrynowicz says, "A camouflaged St Chamond of the 2nd battery, Groupement lll. It has a non-standard observation turret in the rear, most probably made in the field workshop from a trench observation turret. The tank is named "Chantecoq" and bears a beautiful painting of a crowing cock. The photograph was taken in June 1917."

This is a fake observation tower, intended to distract from the actual driver and commander's turret.

Similar to the painted viewing slits.

Look where the "tower" is (See the cut).
