It seems to be a boiler to produce hot water -as such it could be part of a field kitchen but could also be attached to a field laundry or a bath unit. All of these were unglamorous but vital. Given the squalid conditions at the front it is amazing that none of the armies were decimated by disease (although trench fever - a form of typhus - did pose serious problems in 1918).
It's described as a field kitchen in the caption but, yes, it does look like just a boiler. Purchased with contributions from the citizens of Manchester, many of whom were probably lucky to get a bath once a week in those days.
