Dears frieds:

The history of the food had in the Fray Bentos city (in Uruguay,Sout America) a great antecedent. In this little port of the Uruguay River, born the Liebig Extrat of Meat Company, in 1863 and became to a formidable experience. The citi was named "the kitchen of the world". The soldiers of all the wars in Europe since 1870 was feed wit the OXO productos or the Fray Bentos corned beef.

I am looking for information, pictures, etc. about the glorious Fray Bentos tanks (the original and the N II).Something said me that a Fray Bentos III existed too in the W.W. II fighting in North Africa.

Rene, I don't know if you're aware ofanother contribution to Britain's war effort by Fray Bentos products.

I can't remember now where I read this, but the story, told by a British soldier,goes something like:

"Knowing that the Germans were short of food, we would begin firing tins of bully beef into their trenches with a catapult. We'd send over quite a few, then, when we calculated that a crowd would have gathered, we'd send over a couple of grenades. Then we'd hear the bugles blowing for stretcher bearers."

Not very sporting, I'm afraid. Especially when you consider that the company was founded by two Germans.

James; thank a lot for your information. Endeed, Fray Bentos exists today and the old frigo were born the Liebigs Company is a municipal property. There, I am the Director of the Industrial Revolution Museum. We are trying to save this rich heritage that is the european history too.

You and others friends in Europe, has the great possibility of obtaining photos, books and documents on the war, that we in Fray Bentos, lives of so different way. Our chimneys were cannons shooting life, with food for the troops.

This material is a gold for us, since we want to re-compose this history that had two so different faces: in this side of the ocean the work and the prosperity and in another side, misery, destruction and pain.

Thanks to Internet, many friends whose faces I do not know, are cooperating with the sending of photos, photocopies and materials for our museum. It is for us very interesting, because when European people come to visit us, they meet the surprise of which the " Fray Bentos " that they eat every day, is a pretty city of Uruguay.
