British Commercial Vehcile Museum - Leyland, Lancs.

Hi all, I watched a program on TV last night about the above museum. I dealt mainly about the politics of running a volunteer staffed organisation. Saw little of the vehicles, a lot of the Popemobile, a quick glimpse of a WD petrol/diesel tractor?

They have a fantastic archive, part viewable on website.

Like many Museums it looks to be at risk due to the Lottery support of the commercialised Olympics.

Here are links to some archive images, please note the Museums copyright policy.

2 trucks and several motorcycles. All of these vehicles were for a First world War expeditition by Sir John Willoughby, I'd like to know more about that.

Great links, thank you.

"2 trucks and several motorcycles. All of these vehicles were for a First world War expeditition by Sir John Willoughby, I'd like to know more about that." These went to East Africa, where the armoured cars were useless! They were way too heavy to move over the poor or non-existent roads, despite being stripped down (there is a photo of these cars minus the turrets) to the essentials. I think they ended up in western Egypt defending against the Senussi, or maybe I am making that up!

Here's the tractor, a 1909 Thornycroft. What a beast! Had no idea any of these were left

Thanks Rob, at least the Thornycroft is now painted more appropriately.

A lot of work has gone into that museum but not always going the same way.
