can anyone instruct me as to how to cut a mitre for trims to go around the bases of dioramas?, if possible with drawings it is not the cutting of the mitre which bothers me , but how do you measure the wood to the right lentgh to begin with.
It a bit difficult to explain in words than actually demonstrate. If you imaging the inside of a picture frame you take the measurement of the inside corners or say the corners of the diorama. The outside end of the mitre cut at 45% should match the other mitered corner, if you see what i mean. Try not to cut the trim in lengths that are near in length of the diorama as you may end up with a short mitre end. Allow plenty of extra trim even though you may have a off cut.
Horrible job. Good luck with it. I put iron-on laminate onto the lot and give it 3 coats of high gloss varnish. Spent possibly the most unhappy weekend of my adult life doing the laminate floor of our bedroom, which included trying to make the beading edge fit together neatly in the corners: never managed it, and used wood filler in generous amounts. Vile, vile, vile...

Artists Supplies shops sell ready made frames that just slot together. Perhaps you could investigate what sizes they have, and then make your diorama to fit.
You need one of these; http://handtools.co.uk/images/get_image.php?mode=full&image_name=FAIMBOX12 Failing that...go to a flea market or junk shop and buy a frame...that´s what I do
my advice, don't buy one of these cheap mitre boxes DIY shops usually sell. They never make a straight cut. Better buy your uncut frames, and find a carpenter, let him/her do the cutting. Can't be that expensive and you'r saving much frustration and non-fitting spoiled material. Or the ready mades as Paul and PDA already said is a good option too. With a bit of luck you'll find nice old frames, polished or veneered. Just work the other way round then, make your dio fit the frame. Good luck!
