WW1 Tanks at Aberdeen Proving Grounds
Permalink

These tanks seem to have disappeared. Or at least that is the impression I had. However if you combine these two statements:

"Museum Director Dr. Joseph T. Rainer... noted that only restored pieces are being moved. ...Artifacts that have not been restored will not be transported and the museum will be fully relocated by the Dec. 15, 2011 deadline, Rainer said." (from rdnance-museum-looks-to-future/">http://www.army.mil/-news/2009/11/04/2983omg.gifrdnance-museum-looks-to-future/ dated 9 November 2009)

and

"The United States Army Ordnance Museum is in the PROCESS OF MOVING TO FT LEE, VIRGINA. The interior galleries have been closed and are relocating to Ft Lee. The Tank Park is still OPEN, BUT please call ahead as the park is closed when shipping artifacts is occurring. THE MOVE TO FT LEE IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN 2012. There is no longer an operational website or email access for the museum; phone only." (from http://www.museumsusa.org/museums/info/15330#pressReleases dated 16 September 2010)

you reach the conclusion that the WW1 tanks are still on display, outdoors in the Tank Park, at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

If any of our American friends can correct me I'd be much obliged; I'd like to see these tanks some day, and Maryland is closer than Virginia, but I'd hate to have a wasted journey.

EDIT: I am not responsible for the silly emoticon in the US Military web address. I think it is pretty funny though, and I'd love to take the credit. But please Mr CIA man, don't launch any Tomahawk missiles or Raptor UAVs in my direction; it really wasn't me!

A likely story unclean creature (see ... some of us remember) which is to say your link was simply broken in any browser I tried - that omg.gif is either an artifact of your [hardware-software-this forum] combination or the humourless United States Military machine has rectified it and the retribution of unequal laws is about to be meted (shades of Tennyson).

Be of good cheer as you await that cruise missile, a link that works (for me) is:

http://www.army.mil/-news/2009/11/04/29838%2dordnance-museum-looks-to-future/.

Y'see, that "8 - o" combination (without the spaces) in the address is the "omg" emoticon and the trick is to break it up by substituting the code % 2d (without the space) for the "-" in the address. Send fare money quickly and I shall be glad to explain that over the smouldering crater where you residence once was.

They recently did a big project measuring and mapping the Mk IV 'Liberty' so it would seem odd if they scrapped it. Note although the museum claims that this tank is the former Brtiannia it is not. Britannia had a cab roof hatch this tank does not. Moreover Britannia eas never fitted with brackets for unditching rails this tank has them - and so on. Writing to the museum elicits no response.

I am aware of the measuring job that took place years ago; testing some laser thingamajig or whatever. I am unaware of any recent measuring that's taken place. Could you elucidate, please?

It would seem that translaing the results of the measurements took some time. Papers were published about two years ago

I visited APG in May 2009 and last year in May. Doing some dimension taking and photos for a future projects of the Mark IV ,whippet and skeleton tank. There was a number of tanks missing from 2009 to 2010. The skeleton tank was gone in 2010. The condition of the two WW1 tanks was sad to see. Both the Mark IV and whippet are rusting out from the inside out. Structurally I don't beleive they can be moved without falling apart. The convenor there said they planned to refurbish the Mark IV. I have stumbled across some sites that have shown the empty grounds at APG as tanks are being moved out. It was a 10 hour drive from outside to Toronto, Ontario to APG. Some thought I was nuts to go there. For me it was very rewarding to make and take the time to travel to see these machines. Before you know it there gone.
