Awhile back I spoted a question about WW I movies on youtube. i can't remember where on this site so i am posting it here:
Good Soldier Svejk Dobart Vojak Svejk Czech with subtitles a comedy. Sorry no combat.
Nicholas And Alexandra based on the book of the same name on the the last Tsar of russia and his wife.
Romanvy: Ventsenosvaya Semya Romanovs: an Imperial family A Russian Movie about the last days of Tsar Nicholas II and family. With luck you can get it with subtitles.
Ironically, the real life Charlie Chaplin tried to enter the British military during World War One but was rejected because he was too scrawny, having grown up very poor.
Good Soldier Svejk is one of the classics from WW1 - it's worth tracking down the book - the writing is clever and funny even in translation. If I were to try to convey Svejk by analogy perhaps Catch 22 (Joseph Heller) meets Slaughterhouse 5 (Kurt Vonnegut). One of the lines I remember was a Polish sentry who declares "Halt - or I'll shit" - probably says a lot about the Austro-Hungarian Army.

Thanks: you made me and the wife laugh out loud with this.
Sadly, I can't agree about the Good Soldier Svejk which, whilst I agree with its anti-militarism sentiment, was a dreadful, arduous read that I gave up on pretty quickly.
"White Sun of the desert" from Mosfilm I think all the movies have english subtitles....
Russian revolution- Civil war with a difference, I thought it an excellent film.... Orion produce a set of figures "Basmachi" based on the characters from this film....
