While your arguement does hold water and probably the separate artillery piece and gunners  may be cheaper and better quality there is a slight problem. My main concern of waiting for HaT to produce more artillery pieces is the timeline. Consider the sets below.

 8239 WWI French 37mm gun
8240 WWI German Machine Gun 08
 8241 WWI German Jaeger MG08
 Cossack Cavalry.

These sets have been proposed for years but if you look at their WW1 page there is still no reference to them - they are in  limbo with no indication of the progress. Like wise 8306 WWI general purpose artillery limber there is no signs of this appearing despite all the artillery crews having riders. I have boxes full of riders but no where for them to sit (except a few that have become gunners for my 18pdrs)!

If HaT started today would the set be ready by 2018?  Given a choice of jam today or an indefinite wait I would choose the former.

RCD timeline is down too the technology used, Hät uses steel moulds and 175mm masters more expensive and time consuming to make but unlimited production capability, strelets uses resin moulds and 1/72 masters quicker to make but with a limited production capability of around 5000 sets, and much of their production is now unavailable... on the other hand it took strelets how many years to produce the British cavalry and still no Austrians will they arrive by 2018?... theres no guarantee in any of this...

I would rather see strelets concentrating on the other guns like the De Bange large calibre guns as i cant see anyone else producing them in injection moulded plastic ever,  though I would prefer more accuracy in the models they produce and less chunkiness and better proportion in the figures... something which Orion seems much better at doing using the same technology sadly they dont yet make anything for the Great War.

From the word go Ive been unhappy with the traction engine wheels on the current Strelets guns(and said so on their forum, maybe I should have emailed them instead) too few spokes I can live with, but its worse their wrongly arranged and that for me means if I buy any they would need to be altered.. probarbly I'll buy one to see if its possiblesmile Strelets have proved themselves  to be capable of producing these kits but why settle for a product with obvious accuracy issues?

Cheerswink

Because we are used to settling for inaccurate products - Airfix started that "tradition" with their British Infantry, Royal Horse Artillery, and Tank Mark I. Emhar carried on the tradition with their Mark IV tanks.

On the positive side, it means lots of aftermarket companies can make a living selling us stuff we wouldn't have needed if the products were made right in the first place.

PDA, I was Refering too Strelets not the customers as they could have corrected it at an early stage in the developmentwink

Excellent initiative of yours RCD lobbying for 155 mm French guns. I'm all for it and as far as the model is concerned, I like

- mass-produced guns that served in numbers

- guns served for a long time, so pref. early war

- guns that served several nations

The GPF doesn't really fit the bill, and RPM already makes it. The de Bange models are too huge for my table, but look Strelets style. However I lean towards the m1915 but have too little info about it so far.

I'd also need early war French gun crews.

Right now the atmosphere in the Strelets forum isn't attracting me at all to post there so I will only write an e-mail to Strelets. Regards, Pat

I cannot claim credit for the idea of French and German artillery pieces that was from Strelet. I just mused that it would be nice to see other nationalties represented. PDA has kept the momentum going. What suprises me that there has been no rush for German artllery pieces. Contrast to WW2 modellers and the naziphileswould be swamping the theme!

I would be happy to have any French equipment manned by French. The only reason for mentioning the GPF is that I am all fingers and thumbs when it comes to making up plastic models. I almost lost the will to live when doing a wireless FT by RPM a few years back and ended up using a HaT FT as the main body . I would rather have a simplified version of this attractive artillery pieces. Looking at PDA's excellent pictures I would have the tendency to move towards the Canon de 155 C modčle 1917 Schneider if only one French is to be produced.

I would agree that there are several dorks on the Strelet site that regularly appear to be looking for a fight but when you read their imput they just come over as  real pratts! Lets face it like all hobbies modelling has its fair share of 'sad lads'  - go to any modelling show and they stick out like a sore thumbs.I also like taking photographs of steam trains and the same equally applies. Add country walking  (but without a pompom on my wooly hat) with my dog to my other hobbies and I probably also come under the heading of a sad lad!

I'd be more than happy to have that one rather than none, especially as it seems it can be backdated to the mle 1915 by just changing the breach. It also seems the Russians used quite a similar model.

In my humble opinion, HaT have done an excellent job with their WW1 hard plastic guns. Less than ten parts each but still look the part.

I'm impressed by the energy you are putting into vituperating the WW2 German mania so I won't risk mentioning no-one so far has done a full set of Wehrmacht artillery crew. There are gun kits that come with some crew, though, so what is more urgently needed is clearly Western Allied gun crews. Moving back to WW1, I'd love to see an early war French artillery set. Regards, Pat

O/T but is it a french gun tube in the 155? There are several pics of that gun on the net but no details. In english anyways. The part of the tube just fwd of the cradle looks like a geman 12.8 cm but the breech block is verticle and the recoilers layed out differently.
Thanks.

The barrel on the 155mm GPF at the Musée du Fort, La Pompelle comes from the 105mm gun of an AMX-30 tank.

There are surprising few surviving 155mm GPF guns.

Regards,

Charlie

'Geobbels minatures' have just produced a set of wehrmacht artillery crew as well as a set of goose stepping Nazis.Certainly some strongcrew who can handly artillery shells single handed! They are not a match on the Revell horse drawn artillery set which for me is a better representation of the Wehrmacht.

TBH the images I have seen of that set do not look promising - like multi-part figures with oversized limbs fitting together badly. Will reserve judgement until I have actually seen the product. Until then, I have converted some Revell infantrymen to add to the Revell artillery crew.

In the three years since we debated this one, Ace have released the Schneider m1917 155mm howitzer. I bought one and it looks great in the box but have not found the time yet to put it together. Should plans of the Tsarist version become available, I will be tempted to convert the French gun into that one.

Now HäT, bring the gun crews that have been in the works for so long now! Regards, Pat
