I'm going to be making a Thornycroft using this kit:
It says it is 1/72 scale and suitable for OO/HO (so it could be anything from 1/72 down to 1/87!). This kit is from either Davric Kits or Tony Brown Models, but I think it was originally made by Keil Kraft at the Dawn of Time. I got it off ebay.

The theme of the group build - The Other Guys - basically includes any subject from the Great War that wasn't a proper fighting machine, but rather one of those which supported the combat troops indirectly.
This might include, but not be limited to: locomotives, supply tanks, trucks, ambulances e.t.c.
Examples of subjects that might be excluded would be: tanks, artillery, AA-lorries, armoured cars e.t.c.
Figures are ofcourse very welcome too, in which case infantry, cavalry, artillery men e.t.c. would be excluded, whereas truck drivers, stretcher bearers, nurses, pidgeon handlers e.t.c. would fit perfectly within the theme.
There will ofcourse be subjects that fall into a kind of grey zone when it comes to categorizing them. For example gun portees, which can transport a gun like an artillery tractor, but still have the ability to be used as self-propelled artillery. In the end, it is up to each and every one of us to decide what would fit the theme. Discussions about subjects and the conditions of the group build can be adressed here.
On January 1:st 2013 the group build officially started, and it will end by January 1:st 2014, by which time all participants should have posted pictures of their finished works. Anyone is free to join the group build within the time limit, and there is no limit on the amount of models a single person can participate with.
Please supply information on the model or subject (manufacturer, scale, subject name) which you will build in this thread.
There has been some talk about selecting a winner by the group build's end, and sponsored prices. We'll see what happens...
Personally I will have a go at Matador Models 15t Holt Tractor, 1/76 scale. I'll probably buy an 8" howitzer for it to pull later on.
I have the same kit, by Keilkraft. A nice basic kit with lots of scope for mods and detailing but... sure you can bring it back to WW1 standards? The wheels and the mudguards seem too modern, and the headlights and radiator sheel look untypical of the era. Maybe it's easier to scratchbuild the thing? If a conversion is possible, please advise! Adn count me in for the group build. I may have to choose a suitable subject, though! D. (thinking on the Horse Ambulance, seriously)
It is, ofcourse, perfectly alright to exclude oneself from any competitive elements of the group build.
The main goal, in my view, is to bring forth as many different and interesting models completed by us as possible in time for 2014. Some are spurred by competition, others are not.
Since everyone else is doing it I thought I would enclose some pics of what is going to be in mine. There will be a few of these. With rider/passenger etc.
MGM German Pigeion trailer or FSF Artillery observation trailer.
Which would be better?
or both? theres a year to go.
Greetings, Josh

So for my opening bid an RPM Renault TSF... I may combine this with something else time permitting.
The rivets looked like something from a medieval torture chamber so I've sanded the hull to make them less prominent and removed the turret ones completely to start again from scratch.
I figured if supply tanks are ok a radio tank would be too???

I think I might try my hand with one of those RPM kits as well. Are the rivets really that bad?
It's a bit of a lottery with the 1/72 RPM Renaults I've got 5 versions (they're all based on common sprues) and only the TSF had really bad rivets... the turret was worse and with the poor joints it just seemed easier to start again!

Has anyone else noticed "new and improved" seems to mean it doesn't work as well as it used to?
It's entirely up to you, mecanix, whatever you are comfortable with. However, I like to see WIP photos: I find them useful, I find them motivational, and it dispels any doubts about being the only one taking part.
A few posts on Supply Tanks gave me an idea for a sculpture. Up until now I have only made a few fun poking sculptures for friends, now I want to push myself and make something a little more scale... ish. Of course there is still the humour element.
I have scribbled as best I can the basic premise for the sculpture. Not happy with what I've drawn, but not going to do any more as I know that runs the risk of killing the interest in it for me. I find if I don't leave enough options for change and exploration in the sculture, then it will be a struggle to finish.
Hope you like. I will probably start in a few weeks time and post photos as I go along.

I do hope that you will show your work in progress, and describe methods and materials. I suppose you could 3D print an armature for the figure? It looks like an interesting challenge.
Firstly I must stress that this build will not be one for purists. If it's 80-90% correct
and at the end, it looks like a Holt I will be satisfied.
One of the problems will be the scale, 1/32nd.This is to go with the Scale Link 60 pounder
that will go behind. Its a tribute to my grandfather who served with a RGA unit between 1916-19.
So I will be doing a "Pick'n'mix'' build across 1/32nd and 1/35th, bulking the latter parts out and relying upon the similarities
between a Cat C60/ChTZ S60 and the Holt.
If anybody would like an accurate kit I am informed that a 1/35th from one of the resin companies
is expected by the late summer/early autumn.
Anyway....these are the basic donor parts.
The white metal parts are a bag of 1/32nd Traction Engine bits I bought from Finescale.
The resin is a C 60 gasoline engine conversion for the Trumpeter ChTZ S65 from LZ models in Galway
and the tracks are from AA .
I was lucky enough to get some copies of the manual from Jack Mueller via this site and so I started with the main frame
I then added the machinery sub-frame
finally the tiller wheel, which is a couple of w/metal Traction wheels glued together, surrounded by plasticard rings of various sizes. I added suspension springs from solder.
Next the track and suspension.
regards.

It's a work of art already. I'd be very interested in learning more about your grandfather, my great-grandfather was in RGA too, a mountain gun battery, only had his WW1 service confirmed about 10 months ago, despite having an interest in WW1 for years I didn't know I had a direct link to a relative in the war
Well good news. the paint arrived yesterday. full scale mass production can now recommence. I'll have pics up later today.
Greetings, Josh

It will be a simultanious build with the Gotha GIII I'm doing on Greatwaraviation. between the two, I'm as busy as I've ever been model making. hopefully both will turn out spectacular.
can you guess what it is?

Mk I Nut, I love the sketches and the idea! I've seen plenty of pictures from all eras of soldiers casually sitting on top of ammunition like that, but I've yet to see someone doing a vignette depicting that. Very much looking forward to seeing your progress.
mecanix, your progress so far looks stunning! It inspires my own Holt-building efforts very much.
FR73, the model subject is terrific! I was hoping someone would do something with pigeons.
Decided what i'm going to do - i'll build the Matador Models water cart, will have to change the wheels for definite with WD ones, and ideally i'd like to detail it with figures wearing Wolseley 'pith' helmets and build a Gallipoli diorama, as water was so vital out there, and can testify to that myself having been out there and drinking several litres a day! Only problem at the moment is sourcing 1/76 figures with Wolseleys, WD Models is due to release some but unsure when
These are the Trumpeter kit parts I am using. The toothed drive wheel is original but the return wheel on the right is slightly larger and taken from a HobbyBoss kit.
The cross members are Evergreen and the coil sptings made from solder wrapped around various sizes of rod.
The original wheels have been wrapped in Evergreen siding and used as drive wheels connecting the drive shaft to the fly wheels above.
The chain is Grandt Line railway drive chain.
Hopefull this section will be done by the week-end.
Thank you for your kind words, if I can help another Holt build just ask.
