Strelets 6 Inch Gun Mk VII

Hi everyone,

 

After a bit of a break from modelling I'm making a start on the Strelets 6" Mk VII. This is my second attempt at this kit and this time I'm going to make the wheels a little wider and change the carriage type to a version where the gun sits a bit higher (I think this is the version shown on the box cover).

 

 

I started with the wheels, taking an 8mm wide strip of .5mm plasticard and wrapping it around the wheel.

 

I then assemble the carriage, cutting away the sides of the gun cradle. These will be replaced with the new sides which I made using the Strelets 8" howitzer as a template. These won't be glued on until the barrel is assembled to make sure everything lines up.

 

Next I start adding plastic strip to the wheel. For this I use Evergreen 0.4 x 1.5mm StripStyrene

 

Now finished I'll leave it to dry before trimming it down.

 

Now I assemble the barrel. This will require a lot of work, but for now I use it to make sure it sits properly on the gun carriage .

 

Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a bit more done.

Looking good! Does this kit has been molded in soft plastic, or regular styrene?

It's hard plastic, but roughly moulded so that it needs a lot of cutting and filing to get the fit right.

Hi all,

 

Some updates:

 

I've added some footplates from textured plastic sheet

 

A quick basecoat to check for gaps in the barrel, and the the clamps for the gun cradle are added

I like it! Couple of questions, though:

Did the guns have that texture on the footplates?

How did you make the clamps - cut out the "U" shape from plasticard, or bend a plastic rod?

You're doing a great job on this, it's shame though that a new kit should require so much work to get a decent model out of it.

Has anyone else noticed "new and improved" seems to mean it doesn't work as well as it used to?

Good work! And I see that's not the most sophisticaed molding ever. Those spoked wheels are always a nightmare to correct in kits (I recall the same structures on the old Keilkraft steam vehicles wheels). In fact, they use the same principle than the Mark I tank rear trailer wheels.
Wonder if there's a system to fix these things easily, or the best alternative is just doing them with individual spokes...
BTW, that gun barrel sure needed some filler!

Hi PDA,

The treadplates arent included in the kit, these were made using textured plasticard I bought on Ebay: Slaters Embossed Plastikard No.0453 1:87 Scale HO Tread Plate.

 

The clamps are from the original cradle that was cut away.

If you do a google picture search for "6inch BL" (with no space after the 6) there are a number of interesting shots of a gun preserved somewhere in Finland.

There is also a 3rd picture from the same sequence in Ian Hoggs Allied Artillery of WW1 (1998). Hopefully more will turn up.

Very impressive work. I have gained alot of information about improving the Strelet models looking at your contrubutions - thanks!.  This would be a ideal article for the LandshipII site along with the photographs of your painted gun crew that were on another theme. It would help others  (like me!) to improve on our current attempts.

Hi all,

 

Just a couple of changes; I've lowered the position of the front foot plate a little and moved the elevating gears back as I noticed I'd placed them too far forward. Ive also added a rough sight, based on a diagram of a mark IV sight.

 

I added the last touches of paint this morning using Vallejo paints, and I think thats about it.

 

Although the Strelets kits are rather crude and not to everyones taste, I really enjoyed putting this together.

 

Any comments welcome!

I'm very impressed Ian. Even with the dearth of good reference photos you managed to include some details: details that were not ridiculously difficult to make, but definitely add enormously to the look of the model. The additions you have done seem in proportion to the cost of the kit, and not beyond the skill level of many of us (don't take that the wrong way - it's meant to be a compliment!)

Very impressive Ian and will aid me when I have another go at this model.

Just a couple of questions

1. What shade of green do you use as looks more appropiate than the shade I use.

2. What do you use for the rust as it looks better than the Humbrol version.

3. I see you have not out on the brakes - is that due to the excellent picture that shows the gun in action but minus the brakes?
