I am very interested in the history of dogs that pulled in the war. We have a very large Newfoundland that pulls a variety of vintage carts at steam fairs etc and have put together a small collection of pictures of dogs pulling a variety of carts. The most interested picture I have is of a battalion of soldiers along side a line of dogs pulling guns. I would love to know more history about this if anyone can please help, pictures etc. Many thanks, Pete
If you use the "Search" menu from the menu bar towards the top of the (any) page and enter the search term dogs you should find a dozen or so topics (some with pictures) to keep you busy for a while. The search function is a little uncertain, there could well be quite a few other topics it doesn't return on that simple search.
Members here will surely be interested in your picture collection, if you can include any in your future posts (with any applicable attribution and without breaking copyright). And yes, your Newfoundland "in action" too!
Not sure on the exact breed but it seems the Belgians were the most prolific users of military cart pulling dogs, and there is a relatively well known photograph of such a cart, with machine gun fitted, with three British soldiers stood by, i'm not sure of whether the British were actually using them or just a photo opportunity. Don't suppose you were with your dog at the Great Dorset Steam Fair last week? Saw a superb dog cart display there
Sorry, it was not us at Dorset steam fair. I have been buying post cards of eBay and enlarging the good ones to go on the display.. I had a history teacher look at my large picture of the war dogs pulling the guns and he was filling me with questions etc, he said he taught history and did not no dogs pulled gun carts, he the patted me on the back and said "thanks" I will go home and research this.... This one man made my weekend and all the work involved setting the stand up very worthwhile.
