Hi,

I live in Australia and am in the process of building a WW1 themed model railway set in 1917/1918 when Australia contributed some Railway Operating Company's. As I am working in 00 Gauge for this, I would like to convert the Airfix MkI's to Mk IV's, rather than using 1/72 kits. I have tried to contact Matador Models by fax, with no joy, does anyone know of any stockists of his conversion kits that I need?

Second, does anyone know if the Mk IV Supply tank sponson's differed from those used for the MkI?

Cheers,

Hendo

Hendo,

you might be able to get some Matador stuff from Scalelink: http://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Great_War_Range___1_76.html but Matador themselves are rather hard to contact - years ago I tried their fax but never received a response. The only stuff I have bought from them was via snail mail.

Yes, the MkIV Supply sponsons were different to the MkI and MkII Supply sponsons.

Just a thought, but if the railway is the focus, could you rescale the paper models of the tanks you need? You can print them out at home so there's no waiting for Matador to spring to life. http://www.landships.info/landships/models.html# and here: http://landships.activeboard.com/t61610666/mother-her-children-the-mki-tank-in-all-its-guises/

Hello Hendo, (and PDA),

The Scalelink site doesn't appear to have the conversion sets available, even though they are 'listed' on the website. As for Matador Models themselves, well, over here in British isles, modellers have had 'problems' buying from them.

They do (Matador Models) sometimes attend model shows, but stock is limited and I think the owners are getting 'on a bit'. I think their range/moulds need to be bought up, and a new owner take up the helm.

Try posting your requests/wants list on a few other modelling forums, and you never know, someone might have these conversion kits stashed away somewhere.

Other than that, it's either scratch building or, if you have access to a 3D printer, do as PDA suggests: resize some plans and print your own conversion bitys and pieces.

Sorry, I can't be of more help.

Good luck with your project.

Grant

Actually I didn't mean 3D printing; I meant print out on a regular printer the paper models.

If you want a MkI or MkII Supply in 1/76, another option is the Modelltrans Modelbau conversion kit for the Airfix. If you want a MkIV Supply you could rescale a paper model or just rescale the bits you need to add on to the Airfix. However, in my experience, 1/72 parts fit 1/76 kits, and vice versa, so you could use the MkIV Supply sponsons from Mister X and/or Modelltrans. Basically, Matador are not the only game in town any more.

BTW have you seen the WW1 stuff from Bachman, and WD Models?

Apologies PDA, got my wires crossed about what you meant.

Hendo,

I'm seeing Matador Models on feb 27 at the On Track model show in Folkestone. As I'm regularly trading their kits, feel free to order with me and I can bring them along for you. Likewise, I'm trading Modelltrans kits, so just let me know if I can help you out with any of their WW-1 kits.

rgds,
Michel.
