Our trip to The Weald Foundation
Permalink

The very kind people at The Weald Foundation showed me round their exhibits. https://www.wealdfoundation.org/

Includes our guide, Duarte.

Also, since it's not too far away we called in on the Mark IV in Ashford.

Is that a La Buire trailer in the 4th image?

I thought they were supposed to be extinct.

It certainly is a La Buire. Or possibly a Weitz - I'm not sure of the difference. This has had sides added and been used for transporting, amongst other things, coal. You can see a couple of bits of coal in the photo.

There's quite a bit of discussion about it on various sites. There might be more than one in existence. They intend to restore this and use it to haul the FTs around.

And I can't find it now, but there's film of the La Buire/Weitz arriving at the workshops on the back of a low-loader.

The use of La Buire trailers to transport Renault tanks was incidental to their most important use. That is, towed behind Knox prime movers

to carry Schneider CD (preferred) or Holt 47 tracked artillery tractors as part of the transport sections of the RALTs (Regiment l'Artillerie Lourdes à Tracteur).

A battery of guns (GPF/St Chamond) was towed by trucks but the last piece of ground was usually too chewed up by shellfire to move the guns into

position using the trucks so the tracked tractor was used to position the guns. It was intended that each RALT had two transport sections with 5 Knox, 5 La Buire trailers and

6 Schneider CDs. Due to equipment shortages very few RALTs had full complements of transport vehicles and most had only one transport section.

It was possible to move a battery (4 guns) of GPF/St Chamond guns many kms overnight.

Youtube disgorged a video on a Weitz trailer at the Parola museum.

It looks very similar to the la Buire trailer. I wonder if the Weitz was a replacement for the la Buire since

the latter was only rated at 8 tons load and was used in an overload condition with the Schneider CD and Schneider CA 1.

I think we've got a crossed line. That link appears to take me to a video of a 1955 Chevrolet restoration. Calls to mind the late Slim Dusty.

Ah. Got it. Excellent. Thank you, PDA.

Weitz.jpg

This is Monsieur Weitz. Clearly of Alsatian background but French by adoption. Rather like Rodolphe Ernst-Metzmaier.

Ca ne fait rien.

But now look at this. I take this to be another Weitz, at Saumur. Didn't notice it when I was there.
